Features of Seiko Spring Drive Spacewalk Watch

Seiko has always been at pace with the technical requirements and the exterior trends of our times, by introducing extremely appealing watches in terms of design and characterized by amazing functionality. This time Seiko proposes a watch for tomorrow, a watch designed to respond to the needs of the future environments, and so it's created the new Seiko Spring Drive Spacewalk watch.

Presented during the Baselworld 2008 event, the new Seiko Spring Drive Spacewalk Watch was designed to be worn during spacewalks, just as its name suggests. Trips to space have become more and more common and so, Seiko wanted to experiment with the traditional watch manufacturing techniques to create something more than just an ordinary watch, a timepiece that could be worn under the most unusual of circumstances. This gave birth to the new Seiko Spring Drive Spacewalk Watch, which was worn by Richard Garriot, one of the 6 voluntary space travelers, in 2008.

The Seiko Spring Drive Spacewalk Watch is equipped with a Spring Drive Chronograph Caliber 5R86 based on a Tri-synchro Regulator that assures the functionality of the watch even under extreme conditions of temperature. Being exposed to temperatures between-20 and up to +70 degrees Celsius, it was important for this watch to use a progressive technical movement that could cope with these circumstances. The Spring Drive Chronograph Caliber 5R86 assures the traditional functions of hours, minutes and seconds, a calendar function, GMT, 72-hour power reserve, and a 12-hour chronograph.

This watch features a case that has to be air-tight as to allow the movement to function in the vacuum of free space and it was crafted from high-intensity titanium, a material which assures a lightness of movement two times lighter than that featuring a stainless steel case. The case is 100 meters water proof and it measures 53x 48.7 mm in diameter. The size of the case provides the best legibility for the dial, which is equipped with two sub-dials for the chronograph in the upper part of the dial, a date window at 3 o'clock, second time-zone; every detailing on the dial being luminescent treated to provide night visibility as well.

This watch was produced in a limited edition of only 100 pieces offered for sale to the watch enthusiasts in 2008. Even though two years have been passed, it is also a highly focused watch today.
