Expressing View Seiko Watches Power Design Project

Established in 2002, Fake Seiko Watch Power Design Project features innovative new artists expressing their view of wristwatches. Thanks to everybody’s support, this year marks the seventh Power Design Project. We acknowledge that it is all due to everyone’s expectations regarding both design and Seiko that we have been able to continue with this project, and we would like to extend our sincere appreciation for this. Since starting up this project in 2002, we have faced such intrinsic themes as “What is time?”, “What is a watch?” and “What is Seiko?”, and through our workshops have continued coming up with an abundance of concept models.

The voices of customers that have come to us through our exhibitions and the commercial realization of project models have served to encourage us anew in our endeavors. The themes every year may be different, but there is no change in our position regarding the ideals we pursue through design. Times change; cities change; life changes; but so long as there are people, we intend always offering up time that everyone is sure to love.

While there are such things as “watch-like watches”, for whatever reason, it more often than not happens that watches designed by designers who have not been involved in watch design before are simple round or square shapes with a straight black band attached. While these may also be viewed as being watch-like, when looked at from the perspective of “watch-like watches” that have evolved as artistically crafted adornments, these watches have what could be called an industrial feel to them. They are what are termed “design watches”.

Thinking about what would result if SEIKO itself was to try its hand at designing such industrial watches led us to the theme for this year – “TOKYO”.

Rather than the watch-like feel brought into Japan from Europe, the watches here are bound to give you a “Tokyo-like” feel. In Japan, a country whose strong point lies in its attention to detail in the creation of things, the watches here are bound to feel more familiar, somehow Japanese…Tokyo-ish.
